European-American University in Ghana

European-American University has decided to issue a statement for the benefit of all interested parties concerning its position in Ghana. This statement is issued in order to prevent any misunderstanding, and to prevent credence being given to any inaccurate material that could be prejudicial to the interests of the University.

1. European-American University and accreditation in Ghana

In 2010, EAU All-Africa Co-ordination acquired a campus in Ghana at Kaemebre, off Bawdjawse Road, Kasoa, Central Region. In July of that year, the Ghanaian Corporate Affairs Commission registered the Ghanaian operation as European-American University College and granted it a certificate to commence business. Application was immediately made to the Ghana Universities Accreditation Board for accreditation and this process continues to be ongoing. During the process, the College will work under the name EAU Centre for Academic Excellence.

The requirements of the process of accreditation mean that students cannot be admitted until such time as the process has been completed successfully, which would also result in a grant of charter as a private tertiary institution from the President of Ghana. As of the present time, no student has been admitted to a program of study at European-American University College in Ghana nor have any students graduated from degree programs there.

It should be emphasised that European-American University College, registered in Ghana, is a separate corporate entity from European-American University, registered in the Commonwealth of Dominica. It is European-American University College that is seeking accreditation in Ghana, not European-American University. This is because a foreign corporate entity is not eligible for the type of accreditation that is being sought.

2. European-American University's Royal Charter

In August 2010, as a mark of recognition and support for European-American University's educational programs in Ghana and throughout Africa, the University was awarded a Royal Charter from HRH Nana Dr. Obeng Wiabo V, the Chief of Gomoa Nyanyano, and Oshihene (Chairman of Lands) of Gomoa Akempim Traditional Area, Ghana. Ghana's historic traditional monarchies are recognized under the Chieftaincy Act 1971. The Royal Charter has been awarded to European-American University, registered in the Commonwealth of Dominica, and not to European-American University College, which is registered in Ghana.

The award of the Royal Charter is separate from the ongoing process of accreditation with the Ghanaian government authorities in respect of European-American University College which has been described above. European-American University has not at any point represented its Royal Charter as a substitute for the accreditation of the Ghana Universities Accreditation Board, and its full engagement with the accreditation process of the latter over a two-year period, which has engendered considerable investment and costs on the part of the University College's sponsors, is ample evidence of its good faith in this matter.

3. European-American University International Partners in Ghana

Currently, European-American University has two International Partner campuses in Ghana. International Partners are affiliated campuses which are authorized to prepare students for programs that can lead to certification for an EAU award. They are owned and operated autonomously, and not by the University. In most cases, International Partners prepare students for their own non-degree certificates or diplomas which are then accepted for either partial or full reciprocal credit by EAU. In this relationship, the International Partner and the students concerned contract with EAU as a foreign university, in exactly the same way as any student from Africa may choose to enter a distance learning program at a university in Europe or the United States of America and then receive credit for their prior studies at an appropriate level. Just as EAU does, other universities also maintain preferred relationships with award-giving bodies in order to establish relationships for credit transfer and accumulation.

As a foreign university operating through the medium of the Internet, European-American University is not subject to domestic university regulation outside its country of registration. While it is conceivable that a country might choose to legislate to prevent its citizens from being able to enrol in foreign distance learning programs via the Internet, such legislation would, as well as being a gross restriction upon individual liberty, be virtually impossible to enforce. No such law currently exists in Ghana or indeed in any other country to the best of our knowledge.

At this point in time, the Ghanaian International Partners have not presented any students for admission to or graduation from European-American University College. They are stakeholders fully engaged in the University College project, and will be actively involved in teaching and academic activities in the event that accreditation is granted.

4. Convocations in Ghana

European-American University has conducted two convocations in Ghana as a means of bringing attention to its intention to establish the University College there and in order to attract partners and investment for this project. At these convocations, no student of European-American University College, whether Ghanaian or otherwise, has been among the graduates.

5. Summary

European-American University wishes to make clear to all parties that its operations so far as Ghana is concerned have at all times been in accordance with applicable laws and have been conducted in good faith throughout. From the outset, we have engaged with the necessary government accreditation process and have been fully compliant with all demands of the officers concerned. No students have been admitted to or received degrees from European-American University College to date.

Egbuta, via email at eauwestafrica@yahoo.com or via surface mail at European-American University All-Africa Co-ordination Office, No. 25, Akinremi Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

Joseph-Rene Vilatte (1854-1929): Some Aspects of his Life, Work and Succession

Joseph-René Vilatte (1854-1929): Some Aspects of his Life, Work and Succession
John Kersey

This work attempts to provide a compact and accessible scholarly re-evaluation of the life and work of Joseph-René Vilatte (Mar Timotheos), a towering figure in the Free Catholic movement.

The present work attempts to provide a general biographical study of Vilatte and then to discuss some particular aspects of his succession, including the posthumous attacks on him. It offers answers to the reader who is perhaps curious as to why an intelligent and well-intentioned clergyman whose work brought comfort and hope to several hundred folk at the least has been so extensively vilified by those he once worked alongside.

Vilatte was a pioneer in the work of church-planting for immigrant and other settler communities in the United States and beyond, seeing in his adherence to the Old Catholic faith a means of ministering to those who found the Protestant nature of the available alternatives unpalatable and the Roman Catholic Church unwilling to see their community worship in a manner indigenous to its traditions (particularly through the use of its native language). Like the missionary bishops of the early church, he established parishes for the communities he served, setting up church buildings and providing valid sacraments through the priests he ordained and appointed. Those parishes, as might be expected, waxed and waned in the complex and often hostile conditions of the time; not least among the hostile parties were the Anglicans and Roman Catholics. But nevertheless, some survived to develop into church movements that survive and thrive to this day, and in the case of the African Orthodox Church, that played a key role in the development of religion among America’s black communities.

Employers - Make sure that the EAU degree presented to you is genuine!

European-American University takes the problem of fraud and misrepresentation of academic credentials seriously. That's why we are one of the few universities to publish a complete list of our graduates and the degrees they hold online.

There is only one European-American University
Although some other institutions may have similar names, European-American University is unique. Founded in 2003 and with our first graduates admitted in 2007, we hold proprietary rights to the EAU name and license its use only to authorized affiliates and service providers. The official website of European-American University is at www.thedegree.org

Online Register of Graduates
All graduates of EAU appear on the online Register of Graduates which can be found here or by following the link on the front page of the University website. The Register is updated within 24 hours of a decision to issue a degree. Non-inclusion on the list means the person in question is NOT an EAU graduate.

All degree documents are issued by EAU itself under seal
Although other institutions may issue their own awards, those awards are not the same as those conferred by EAU and cannot substitute for them. No third party is authorized to prepare any document using the EAU name or to use the EAU name on its own award certificates. EAU never permits its seal or logo to be used on award documentation issued by third parties, nor does it formally endorse any third party award, with the exception of recognizing awards for academic transfer purposes.

The EAU degree certificate
The EAU degree certificate (known in some countries as a diploma or testamur) is the document that certifies the award of a degree. EAU degree certificates of the type used since January 2010 carry a number of features to prevent unauthorized duplication and misuse.

The current style of degree certificate is similar to that shown above. Note the following:

- all certificates have a raised blind seal in the bottom left corner
- the certificate design incorporates guilloches (similar to those used on banknotes) and highly complex designs and backgrounds that will degrade if copied.
- the certificate design uses specific non-standard fonts and typefaces.
- the certificate is in full colour on gold parchment.

If in doubt, contact us
We are always happy to help with any enquiry from an employer or other third party on these matters. Contact us by email by clicking here.

Launch of the Richard R. Slomon archive

The University announces the launch of its Richard R. Slomon archive, which is now available online at www.thedegree.org/slomonarchive.html

Richard Robert Slomon (1941-2010) was a leading libertarian anarchist writer who came to prominence in the 1970s. He led the Abolitionist Caucus, which was a radical anarchist movement within the Libertarian Party in the United States, and edited the journals Quest and Versus State. His former student Rodney S. Colver writes of him,

"He was a gruff, sometimes frustrated, but brilliant intellectual genius who often reminded me of Ayn Rand in that he would prefer to work alone than to compromise one iota of his ideas. It was those ideas that seemed to pour forth from him with abandon. I made sure to keep as many of his articles as possible, and in this compilation are over 90. I think I was always hoping to provide posterity with a glimpse of his intellect. He never received recognition during his life for his work, other than “Liberty Defined” (also listed as Libertarianism Defined”) which is one of the best, concise statements of the Objectivist (Randian) view of the proper role of government. I hope that his views will be sought out now that he is gone."

The Slomon Archive collects a series of letters, papers and journal publications that offer a detailed view of Slomon's most outwardly productive years between 1972-80. These materials will be invaluable for scholars seeking to understand one of the most original minds in the United States libertarian movement of the 1970s.
